Daffodils are fascinating flowers but unfortunately there is a great deal of bad information out there about them. Don’t worry about that though because this daffodils facts vs. fiction article will help you to get on track with all of it. Yet as you are reading through all of this, you can have a great time determining if they are facts or if they are part of fiction.
The most common story about this particular flower is found in the Greek folklore. It is the story of Echo and her love for Narcissus. The love that Echo had for him was symbolized in the daffodil because she had allowed herself to become completely consumed by it. Angry gods tricked Narcissus into looking at his own reflection in a clear lake. He was completely consumed by his own reflection there. Legend has it that he was turned into a flower out of compassion though.
It is stories such as this one that makes some people not enjoy the daffodil as it was intended by nature. Yet it does preserve their place in history on many levels. In fact, no matter what type of culture you are talking about daffodils seem to be a part of it in some way.
For example in some cultures if a person sees a wilted one it is believed to be a sign that they will soon die. It is only fiction that the juice from the daffodils offers a natural cure for those showing signs of baldness. Yet people continue to engage in it as an effort to not lose their hair.
There are some great facts though in our history about the symbolization of daffodils. While it is usually a man that offers flowers to a woman, this is one that she can bestow upon him. Giving a man such flowers can symbolize that you appreciate him, that he brings a smile to your face, and that you have respect for him.Â
The National Cancer Society has its own significance for the daffodil as well. It is believed to be a symbol of hope for those that have been touched by such an illness. It also stands for the love of those that support their family and friends that are fighting the battle against cancer.
As you can see, daffodils are definitely very colorful as well as interesting to learn about. Knowing the facts about these flowers can certainly help you to get the most value out of them. You should be very cautious about where you step when they are in the ground. There is a superstition that stepping on the daffodils can bring you bad luck. That may not be a fact, but destroying such lovely flowers definitely isn’t going to bring you any positive rewards!
